VPS (Virtual Private Servers) are also called Virtual Dedicated Servers. They primarily serve as a well-performing alternative to less-expensive shared web hosting accounts, without the small fortune that a truly dedicated server might end up as.
Essentially, a
Virtual Private Server is basically a "stop-gap" in the price-vs-performance debate.
Virtual Private Servers also require more administrative experience, so it is worth considering a managed virtual private server (also called an assisted plan). An assisted server offsets the majority of server administrative tasks on to a team of professionals who will monitor the server and perform basic patches and updates as required.
Windows Virtual Private Servers
A
Windows Virtual Private Server will typically include Windows 2003 Server or Windows 2008 Server Operating Systems. The Server OS on a virtual private server is essentially an emulated environment. This means that you can "log in" to the server as you would any other Windows machine, but you are not technically at the "root" of the machine. You can perform more intensive tasks in the server environment, but might not be able to install certain machine-level code or software, depending on the exact needs. Web hosting on a Windows VPS is typically performed through IIS (Internet Information Services).
Linux Virtual Private Servers
A
Linux Virtual Private Server can have many different distributions of Linux as it's OS, but generally speaking CentOS is the most popular Linux Server Operating System. Even on a Linux Server, you might not actually be required to interface with the operating system, as most of the software you need will be pre-installed (typically, a control panel is used to manage VPS Web Hosting; popular web hosting/server control panels include Plesk or cPanel). Linux Virtual Private Servers run Apache for web hosting.
Although both Windows and Linux servers can technically run PHP or ASP through emulation, a Linux server is more suitable for PHP-based applications, and a Windows/IIS environment is more suited for ASP.
Since PHP is a more widely-adopted web programming language, Linux Virtual Private Servers are typically the server of choice when it comes to private server web hosting.
